Search digestJuly 2026
July in review: Search Console started measuring content that does not live on your site — and the ranking systems stayed silent for the whole month.
What changed in July 2026 for anyone who owns a site: one genuinely new measurement surface, a month with no ranking updates at all, and one number worth putting in a report.
Product change
Search Console starts measuring off-site content
On 7 July Google introduced platform properties: a new Search Console property type that reports how your posts on Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube perform in Google Search and Discover. Two weeks later, on 29 July, it went globally available to everyone, together with an official guide on analysing that data.
What you actually get is the familiar pair of reports pointed at somebody else's platform. The Performance report gives clicks, impressions and the rest, filterable down to the individual post and the individual query — so you can finally see which search terms send people to your TikTok rather than to your site. The Insights report groups queries into themes and marks them as top, trending up or trending down. Data export works the same way as for a site property.
The framing in Google's own announcement is worth reading twice: the point is a consolidated view for creators and publishers who reach audiences through many channels — explicitly including those without a website at all. That is a notable shift for anyone who has spent a decade treating Search Console as a site tool.
What it does not do: it does not merge into your site property, it does not change how your own pages rank, and it does not give you the platforms' internal metrics. It reports the slice of Google Search and Discover traffic that lands on your posts — nothing more.

The quietest month of the year for ranking
Google's own Search Status dashboard is the authority here, and its ranking history for 2026 reads: May 2026 core update (started 21 May, ran 11 days 21 hours), June 2026 spam update (started 24 June, ran 2 days 1 hour), then August 2026 spam update (18 August). Between them — July, with nothing at all.
A month without a confirmed update is not a footnote; it is a diagnostic gift. When there is no rollout in the window, a ranking movement you observed in July has a different set of likely causes: your own deploys, your own content changes, competitors' changes, seasonality, or measurement artefacts. That is a much shorter list to work through than "maybe it was an update".
Worth pairing with something Google repeats often and repeated again in August: updates are announced shortly after the rollout starts, not days later. So the absence of an announcement in July is evidence, not a gap in reporting.

How much traffic AI answers actually send
Previsible published its 2026 State of AI Discovery Report on 6 July: 6.77 million LLM-referred sessions across 166 GA4 properties in ten industries, November 2024 through May 2026. This is the kind of number no official source publishes, which is the only reason industry research appears in this digest at all.
The headline figures: monthly LLM-referred sessions across the panel grew from 65,249 to 644,478 over the 19 months — a 9.9× increase. ChatGPT accounts for 92.4% of all trackable LLM referral traffic and is still gaining share. Claude grew 64× and passed Perplexity in March 2026; Perplexity itself peaked in March 2025 and has fallen 61% since.

On the calendar
On 6 July Google confirmed the next Search Central Live Deep Dive Europe for Barcelona, 30 September – 2 October 2026, with the location picked from community feedback. Included here only because the Deep Dive format is the structured, multi-day one rather than a keynote tour — the sessions tend to surface implementation detail that does not appear in the documentation.
Action
What to check on your own site
- If any meaningful share of your visibility sits on Instagram, TikTok, X or YouTube — create the platform property now and let it accumulate. There is no backfill.
- Search Console → Performance: split the video appearance out before you draw conclusions about video traffic; appearance mix moves independently of your rankings.
- Any July ranking movement: diff your deploys and your log-file crawl stats first. There was no update to blame.
- Reporting AI traffic: separate standalone assistant referrals from AI answers inside search — they are different channels and only the first shows up as a referrer.
- If you report to a client monthly, put "no confirmed algorithm update in July" in the report explicitly — it changes how they read the numbers.
