What Is Bing Webmaster Tools

Bing Webmaster Tools (BWT) is a free service that helps webmasters analyse and improve their site’s visibility in Microsoft’s Bing search engine. Bing’s global market share is small (around 3-4%), but its ecosystem is growing in importance: Bing powers search in ChatGPT, many aggregators, and some browsers.

Key Features

BWT offers a range of functions, many similar to Google Search Console, but with some unique features:

• SEO reports — check meta tags, headings, duplicates, link issues.
• Backlink analysis — list of domains linking to your site (often shows links GSC misses).
• Keywords & positions — impressions and clicks in Bing, grouped by query.
• Index coverage — which pages are indexed, which are excluded, and reasons.
• URL inspection tool — similar to Fetch as Google, with priority submission.
• Sitemap & robots.txt — upload, error checking.

IndexNow Technology

IndexNow is a protocol that lets sites notify search engines (Bing, Yandex, Seznam, and others) about page changes almost instantly. Unlike traditional crawling that can take days or weeks, IndexNow reduces the time to minutes.

How IndexNow works:
1. Generate an API key and place it on your server.
2. When you publish a new page or update an old one, send an HTTP request:
   https://bing.com/indexnow?url=YOUR_PAGE_URL&key=YOUR_KEY
3. Bing and other participants receive the notification and quickly recrawl the page.

Why Use It Even Without Bing Traffic

• Free audit — BWT reports often find technical issues that GSC misses (e.g., slow pages, markup problems).
• IndexNow — speeds up indexing not only in Bing but also in Yandex. Quickly notify search engines about new pages.
• Link data — Bing has its own crawl graph; sometimes it finds links that Google or Ahrefs don’t see.
• Backup traffic channel — for international projects, Bing may provide a few percent of organic traffic, sometimes with cheaper ads (Bing Ads).

How to Set Up

• Register at https://www.bing.com/webmasters and add your site.
• Verify ownership: via HTML meta tag, XML file upload, DNS record, or import from Google Search Console.
• Upload your sitemap and set up IndexNow (plugins for WordPress and many CMS already support it).
• Regularly review error reports and index coverage.
