What is voice search optimization

Voice search optimization (VSO) is adapting an SEO strategy to account for the characteristics of voice queries. Voice queries are longer, more conversational, and often contain question words (who, what, where, when, why, how). Answers are read aloud — content format requirements change fundamentally.

VSO is not a standalone strategy but a layer on top of standard SEO. Most VSO measures improve regular rankings too: FAQ sections, featured snippets, page speed, LocalBusiness schema.

Google Assistant reads the featured snippet or first answer-containing result to the user. Getting into a featured snippet for a question query = getting into the voice answer.

Creating conversational content

A significant share of voice queries are local: 'pharmacy nearby', 'where to eat downtown?'. Local VSO is critical for businesses with physical locations:

  • Google Business Profile: fully completed profile — address, hours, phone, photos
  • LocalBusiness schema: site markup to transmit NAP data
  • Near me optimization: content mentioning the neighborhood, city, landmarks
  • Reviews: voice search often looks for 'best place nearby' — ratings matter
  • Local FAQ: 'How do I find you?', 'Is there parking?', 'What are your hours?'

Technical VSO factors

  • Page speed: voice search = mobile search; load time < 3 seconds
  • HTTPS: Google prefers secure sites for featured snippets
